Hangar X
Reclaim public space at Tempelhof Airport
Golem - Labor: an immersive dance VR experience
Golem - Labor: an immersive dance VR experience. Golem-Labor explores interdisciplinary and transnationally the interface of art and technology, man and machine, physical and virtual reality. This international research project created jointly between the Goethe Institute, choreographer Carly Lave, and gamelab.berlin of Humboldt University zu Berlin is working over the next year on the above topics. Using motion capture technology, we are recording the dance styles of dancers at different cities globally to create a virtual performance experience through Virtual Reality headsets. We are doing this in order to connect dancers and dance styles globally through new technology (motion capture & VR), in efforts to make tech more accessible to the arts and revolutionize what dance can be with immersive tech.
For Hangar X, we would install a virtual installation through multiple VR headsets setup in a room for a weekend. Audience members could come in and step into a virtual performance for a short duration and observe dancers moving virtually. Through gamelab.berlin we have multiple VR headsets to use for this installation, and have a hygiene process for keeping with COVID regulations.
The project seeks to expand what our bodies can be digitally and allow for the creation of self beyond the physical form, using the medium of dance. We are passionate about dismantling expectations of gender, sexuality, race, body-type and nationality through the virtual space. These digital environments allow us to see beyond norms of society, and reinvent the rules that govern power structures socially. We seek to create worlds of equality and possibility through the virtual space. Additionally, we want more of the public to have the opportunity to use VR and experience immersive artistic environments.
